Why 2022 is the year to buy an Electric Car

23 March 2022

It’s a great time to buy an electric car as 2022 is set to be the best year yet for EV’s

The popularity of Electric Vehicles (EVs) are growing year-on-year, and after a couple of difficult years in the automotive industry, there is plenty of optimism for what 2022 will bring for the EV.

What happened in the car industry in 2021?

The pandemic and semi-conductor shortage impacted the car industry significantly, meaning that the market was almost 30% below pre-Covid levels. Despite this, EV’s still enjoyed a record year in which more battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered than in the previous 5 years combined!

Key 2021 EV stats:

  • 5% of new cars registered in 2021 can be plugged in. (Full-electric and Plug-In Hybrid models)
  • A further 8.9% of the new car market was taken by hybrid vehicles
  • This means that 27.5% of the new car market is electrified in some form
  • In the last two months of 2021, BEVs, which refer to fully-electric vehicles, took a market share of over 25% in each month which was a record high.
  • The used market for EVs rose by over 50%! As more new EV models are released and electric cars become older, this figure is expected to rise even further and rapidly.

"Once again it is electrified vehicles that are driving the growth"

Over 50 new electric vehicle models are due for release this year, increasing the choice for consumers significantly, and bolstering the used electric car market.

Ford also recently announced that a further 7 pure-electric vehicles will be on their fleet by 2024.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, stated that electric vehicles will once again drive the growth in the car industry in 2022, as it did in 2021 after the covid-19 pandemic.

Experts predicted a great year for growth of EVs, and the data so far has proven this to be correct!

Ford's future electric fleet

Key 2022 EV stats:

  • Over half of all new cars registered in February were electrified in some way - either BEV, PHEV or hybrid models
  • New forecasts suggest registrations of BEVs are due to grow by 61% in 2022
  • PHEV registrations are estimated to grow by 42% this year
  • For the first time ever, sales of electric cars are forecast to exceed those of diesel ones in the UK
  • By the end of 2022, almost a quarter of new cars will be vehicles that you can plug in

Is 2022 the year you’ll be driving an EV?

Recent research by EV charging app, Zap-Map, has revealed that EV drivers are ‘highly satisfied’ with their decision to purchase a zero emissions car.

Buying a used electric car used to be difficult - not so in 2022. Ever-increasing sales of new EVs means that there is now a far wider range of all-electric hatchbacks, SUVs and saloons available on the used market.
